Plaid Culottes

I love the sophisticated yet slouchy silhouette of culottes. But styling these pants can be tricky. Paying attention to what top and what shoes to wear are the keys to make them look flattering for me.

  • Choose a top that has less volume than the culottes to avoid looking like drowning in fabric.

Since culottes look more sophisticated with a refined top, I teamed them with a silky bell-sleeve blouse. The way it drapes well adds such a nice complement to the flowing fabric of my culottes. Then I added a wool-blend sweater vest over the blouse for two reasons: first to make it fall-appropriate; and secondly, to decrease the volume of the top and draws attention to a small waist. In this way, it wouldn’t create that wide on the top, wide on the bottom silhouette that makes me look like a big box.

  • Pair them with heels to lengthen the leg line. Anything from a pump to a strappy heel, or a sexy bootie will work.

Since culottes stop halfway down my calf, they can make my legs look heavy. This is why I chose a block heel pump today. The lift works wonders to elongate my legs and make me look taller and slimmer, while the block heels help not to sacrifice all the comfort.
